Next meeting:
Don and I are getting settled, I'm learning how to get around without the GPS and we already made an offer on a house that we saw during the first week we were here. If all goes well, next weekend we will take possession. Jacqui and her boyfriend will be visiting from New York during the Thanksgiving holiday and I can hardly wait. The day after Thanksgiving, we'll all drive to Lafayette, Louisiana for a family reunion of Don's cousins. So far, 60+ are attending and I'm making four pecan pies to share.
I attended the October General Membership Meeting of the NAWIC Gulf Coast Chapter at lunch time today and thought you'd be interested in learning a little about them. Our meeting was held at The Dock Bar and Grill Restaurant in Gulf Port, and located on the beautiful Bayou Bernard. See the photo from the outside deck.
First of all, I learned that it was the Gulf Coast Chapter that started Block Kids and that the Chapter is still keeping this fun program alive. This year they will be holding the contest at a local Boys Club. They host a golf tournament once each year that serves as their only fundraiser that pays for their scholarship fund, sends their President to conferences and pays for the costs associated with their local outreach projects and annual officer installation and other chapter needs. Their chapter's main projects deal with local outreach (We love this, right?). But one year, their WIC week project lasted a month of Saturdays while they built a special interview room for The Child Advocacy Center in Gulfport.
They only have 15 members and most are younger with children so they hold their meetings at various locations during lunch and their meetings are much more casual in that they do not start the meetings with the pledge of allegiance or an inspirational message. Several members were missing as one company with 4 members had a big bid they were preparing.
After the meeting is called to order, they do go around the table and introduce themselves and their companies, then they go right into the Program, after which the guest speaker can choose to stay for lunch or be dismissed. Then they conduct business while eating lunch. After the President adjourned the meeting, we had a great time finishing lunch and actual visiting and getting to know each other.
These ladies are a dynamic group of owners, senior estimators and project managers, etc., and very dedicated to the industry. It was my pleasure to be asked to share a little about the fantastic Central California Coast chapter and its activities, particularly about the Foster Kids backpack program and the Foster Teens annual Christmas gift bags program and of course, MAGIC Camp, now called Camp NAWIC. They had never heard about MAGIC camp and were very interested in getting more information.
I miss you all and just hope that if you're in the neighborhood, we can be your host.
Warmest regards,
Joan
